The 1830's saw an influx of half- pay officers from the British Navy who came to seek their fortune in the colonies.

Admiral Henry Vansittart, an independently wealthy half-pay naval officer, came to Oxford to settle near the current site of Woodstock. He brought with him several other half-pay officers, including the highly decorated, Captain Andrew Drew.
