On the morning of November 24th 1854 Abigail Becker awoke to find the ship, 'The Conductor' healed over, a half a mile from her home.

Realizing there was no time to summon help she instructed the children on starting a fire and getting hot tea ready for the men. Though she could not swim a stroke Abigail waded through the cold November waters.
