Haldimand
County was first occupied over 10,000 years ago by native people.
More recently, the area was settled by Joseph Brant, leader of the
a band of Iroquois who fought with the British against the United
States during the war of 1812.
Each
of Haldimand's main centres has a fascinating story to tell. Haldimand
is split up into six major towns or villages: Caledonia, Hagersville,
Selkirk, Jarvis, Dunnville and Cayuga. Each one played a roll in
the development of the area around the grand river known as Haldimand.
An area so prized by Joseph Brant that he would pick Haldimand over
any other piece of land in Canada as his reward for fighting against
the United States!
