It is believed
that Captain McLeod set his course for Port Stanley and almost
made it but the waters were so rough and the harbour entrance
so narrow that he turned away and headed westward to seek
the safety of Rondeau.
On December 7th 1909 the Marquette Bessemer No. 2 left Conneaut,
Ohio, with Captain Robert McLeod as the Skipper. It was loaded
with thirty hoppers and gondolas of coal. It was, at the time,
four years old.
