Col. Thomas Talbot and Mahlon Burwell were targeted by the Americans during the War of 1812. Talbot escapes capture, but Burwell is not so lucky. While no major battles took place in Elgin County, a series of raids throughout the war left a significant impact upon the settlement. The American flag once flew over St. Thomas.
