Emily Stowe fought an uphill battle against the established medical practices of Upper Canada. She was born in a time where women's lives followed a set pattern.

She applied to the Toronto School of Medicine, only to be told that women would never be accepted there. In 1867 she became the first practicing female physician in Canada.
