In 1841 the British Colonial Government informed the Six Nations people that they could no longer afford them protection because they had become too diffuse throughout Upper Canada. They sought to move the native populations onto reserves.

Most of the relocation occurred peacefully, but the story of the forced relocation at Cainsville shows a darker side of the movement.
